The brief

The storefront needed to go up quickly, come down quickly, and not be wasted once the pop-up ended. The answer was a kit of stacking marine-ply boxes, held together with ratchet straps rather than fixed joinery, so the whole front could be assembled and struck without specialist tools. Once the pop-up finished, the same boxes were designed to be reused as seating.

Working to the brief

Both the budget and the turnaround were tight, and the finish was kept simpler than on a permanent piece, agreed with Unit 38, the architect on the job, as the right trade-off for a temporary structure rather than a compromise nobody signed off on.
