The brief
Moss Space took on the garden at the Illustration Garden and brought Universal Joinery in to build six portable planters for it. The brief was straightforward: the planters needed to live outside permanently, stand up to being wheeled around as the planting changes, and not rot within a few years.
Built for the outdoors
The planters are UC3-treated timber, the grade specified for timber used outside and in contact with the ground, with stainless steel fixings so nothing rusts and streaks the wood. Each one sits on castors, so it can be repositioned without being lifted, and each has a liner fitted inside to keep the soil and moisture off the timber itself.
A simple design
The design itself is deliberately plain: a planed timber box, framed at the top, with no detailing beyond what the brief asked for. The spec here was about durability and handling, not appearance, and the planters are built accordingly.
