The piece

The work already existed, originally shown hung from the ceiling. For this showing it needed to sit on the floor instead, with some new elements added to it. The subframe behind that change was built in plywood, then sent out to be wrapped by another company before installation at Whitechapel Gallery.

What this job was

The artwork and its design are Sonia Boyce’s. The job here was fabrication: building a subframe that could carry the piece in a new orientation, and installing it once it came back from being wrapped. It is a different kind of work from the domestic and architectural joinery elsewhere on this site, and it is shown here as one example of what the workshop can take on, not as a service in its own right.
